3o Παγκοσμιο Συνεδριο Τυπογραφιας & Οπτικης Επικοινωνιας, 3rd international conference of typography and visual communication

In June 2007 the University of Macedonia Press, with the support of the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication at the University of Reading (UK) and the Association Typographique Internationale (ATypI), in collaboration with alterVision, and with the co-operation of Redfish and the Thessaloniki Design Museum, will be hosting the 3rd International Conference on Typography and Graphic Communication with the general theme From Verbal to Graphic. The Conference is part of a programme that has been on the cards since the end of the eighties, aiming to develop education and research in typography, as well as advance typographic practice in Greece. This effort has exceeded the modest boundaries of Greece, culminating in the two international conferences of 2002 and 2004, which put Thessaloniki on the worldwide typographic map.The Conference is now established worldwide as a major event in the field of typographic design and production, communication, and publishing. As a headline event characterised by the high level of organisation, the quality of presentations, workshops, and exhibitions, the Conference is a focal point for professionals in design and visual communication that attracts interest on an international scale to Thessaloniki, making the city the capital of typography during the proceeedings. In 2007 the Organising Committee seeks to exceed the expectations generated by the first two conferences. This time round the effort is supported by ATypI and the University of Reading, famous for the distinguished Department of Typography & Graphic Communication. The conference will host top-level speakers, both professionals and academics, from Greece and the international scene. Their presence guarantees the high level and success of the event, and their contribution is expected to spark debate and reflection on the developments in research, education, and practice in typography. Parallel events will include workshops, demonstrations by companies active in these fields, round-table discussions, debates, exhibitions, competitions, and promotion of new technologies in typography and visual communication. Throughout its duration the conference will, once again, enrich the cultural life of Thessaloniki, as well as Greece, by placing them at the centre of interest for the international typography and visual communication community.

Make Everything New—A Project On Communism

Make Everything New—A Project On CommunismEdited by Grant Watson, Gerrie van Noord & Gavin Everall (2006)Communism is routinely defined as defeated and its conquest the subject of regular celebration. Caught in the disappointment and negative connotations of the past, it has become all but unthinkable. Make Everything New seeks to rescue the idea of Communism from this trap. Collaborating with artists, writers and collectives, this project has commissioned and collected counter-narratives, abstract and unrealistic ideas, engaged political commentary and satirical work, that presents neither an historical or comprehensive overview nor a requiem for the past. It is a collection of partial and subjective accounts of various creative practices, an experimental platform for ideas and an attempt to see in what ways the communist imagination can be materialised as art.Contributors include: 16Beaver, Gopal Balakrishnan, Michael Blum, AA Bronson, Maria Eichorn, Factotum, Dmitry Gutov, Wu Ming, Aleksandra Mir, Sarah Pierce/The Metropolitan Complex, CK Rajan, Raqs Media Collective, Dont Rhine, Martha Rosler, Rob Stone, Alberto Toscano, and Klaus Weber.

foto with notes on a special [localminded] books classification

chotda says in flickr that has organizes his[her books under colourrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
yessss that is diferent!!!!that is quite interesting!!!you see i would always like to have a library that would classify objects with a view more closer to a cont. museum's view i mean to organize its material under various topics that have to do with its inhearent properties colours shape smell or sth
Imagine a library that shows thousands of objects and not only books of course under their colour it is a diferent way and i would work there.

an artist concerning a library a library concerning an artist

A library is a work in progress
material and documentation maintains a weird relation among the librarian, the information units and the audience. Always there s a room in my boom [liars] = always through the reading, the undefined classification of a brain. And inside it.
Lede shows that pic [follow the link] which is in a book in SaoPaolo libraries.
i think it is smart.
libraries maintain books.Store restore and take care of them.
A cool librarian will find it or a lucky person will take it at home.I think its rare to find people in greece talking about libraries and art, libraries and works and finally that we keep saying that a library is a work in progress.

TATE 'S; LIBRARYY!

The Library covers the same areas as Tate Collection (British art since 1500 and international art from 1900). Its strengths are modern and contemporary art, with over 40,000 books, more than 140,000 exhibition catalogues and many rare items in its special collections. The emphasis is on fine art in the Western tradition although coverage is being extended to other world areas. Architecture and design are only selectively collected and photography is covered primarily within fine art practice

WALTER BENJAMIN on books collecting

"It is widely acknowledged that Walter Benjamin was not only a singu-lar philosopher but also the most important and innovative literary criticand essayist in twentieth-century Germany. What is perhaps less well-known is that Benjamin was an accomplished and passionate bibliophile, collecting everything from German literature (especially Baroque),theology, fairy tales, and antiquarian children’s books. Such a collection:the magic of children’s books alongside the mosaic occultism of thoseBaroque texts and the metaphysics of the theological ones! Benjaminhimself was wont to describe his book acquisitions in unabashedly enthu-siastic and historical terms, as in his 1925 letter to Gershom Scholem, where he describes his “epochal” purchase of Von dem Werder’s 1624text, Der deutsche Tasso von Paris. In the course of Walter Benjamin’s shortand wandering life, books were, along with his Paul Klee painting AngelusNovus, his most beloved possessions. Benjamin referred to his love ofbooks as his “bibliomania.” Even when broke, virtually homeless, and inpoor health, he spent what money he had on books."

SECOND LIFE LIBRARY

About SL Library 2.0
Alliance Library System and OPAL are teaming up to extend the programs currently offered online to librarians and library users to the Second Life virtual reality game. Although there are a couple of libraries currently on Second Life, none currently offers programs or services. Alliance and OPAL will start with programs and eventually hope to offer library services.

Second Life is a 3-D virtual world entirely built and owned by its residents. Since opening to the public in 2003, it has grown explosively and today is inhabited by nearly 200,000 people from around the globe. There are shopping malls, events, homes, lands of different types, and best of all, participants can contribute content, buildings, and other digital creations.

what is this blog about

This blog is about a work in progress.
Its about a special library- an art library- a contemporary art library.
I m a librarian working on it since April 2006.
Its for a cont. art foundation located somewhere in Greece.
Actually we re talking about a private book collection that becomes public
through the organization, special classification and services creation.
A library is always a work in progress, an art library could be a great work of art and propably a conceptual work.
