Omelette

whatisomelette?
omelette looks like a postcard, but it's a one-page monthly magazine that can be turned and turned again, like an omelet. on the cover you can see an image, a graphic processing (a genuine master!), inspired by an artist's work; on the second side, the "main column" there's a text inspired by the work on the cover. it is neither a review and, to be exact, nor a critical text. It's a reflection about the artist or about his work or both of them, that accompany the image to cook art in a different way and turn it into a dish, a fast food like an exquisit omelet, ready to be consumed outside the ordinary contexts. omelette is a free 1500 copies monthly magazine, these only because a quite precious rarity must balance its pop vocation.

library

The Independent Library has been set up to archive, file, keep, promote, save, and document examples of artists doing it for themselves.
We know that it's great when you have a project/show/publication/zine/flyer/group, and you put it together, get it out there, it's shown for a month, a week, a day or even a night, but after this it often gets lost. (Let alone the competition between your fantastic projects and the other twelve on the same street, on the same night).

Well this why we are here! We want your flyers, your manifestos, your press releases, your show photos, anything that documents your work and that can be used to get it seen during and after its showing.

Once filled, this library will be able to be visited or copies of its contents sent to anyone who wishes to see them.

The library could be used by someone writing a paper or thesis or dissertation, someone needing help with their practice, or a whole manner of other needs.

So how do I contribute?

What we want you to do, is send us an email to independentartslibrary@hotmail.co.uk expressing your interest. Then we will give you the details to send your documents to us - then send us something. We will send you a short form to fill out in return to aid our cataloguing and search facilities. Just send it back with all your information on it. Simple as that!

So how do I view the stuff?

Again just drop us an email to independentartslibrary@hotmail.co.uk with a brief synopsis of what you are interested in seeing/reading about. We will compile a list of what we have on offer and send it back to you by email.

Alternatively you can just read down on this page and see what we have so far, and tell us what to send you (none as yet though as we have just started this project).

This library is available to the public on an appointments only basis, so get in touch to arrange a visit.

Any question please ask!

Martha Rosler Library
June 2 - August 31, 2007

unitednationsplaza is pleased to announce the opening of Martha Rosler Library on Saturday, June 2nd, 2007 at 19:00. Comprised of approximately 7,700 titles from the artist's personal collection, the Library was opened to the public by e-flux in November 2005 as a storefront reading room on Ludlow street in New York City. It has since traveled to Frankfurter Kunstverein and MuHKA, Antwerp. The library will remain on view in Berlin through August 31st and will travel to Institut national d’histoire de l’art in Paris in November.

"In an act of incredible generosity, one of America’s most important living artists temporarily dispossessed herself of the vast majority of her personal library so that it could be made available for consultation. No borrowing was possible, but the eclectic ensemble of books on economics, political theory, war, colonialism, poetry, feminism, science fiction, art history, mystery novels, children’s books, dictionaries, maps and travel books, as well as photo albums, posters, postcards and newspaper clippings could be studied at will. Smart, decidedly political in orientation, often funny, and all over the place (in that way a perfect mirror of its owner), the library is packed with essential reading and titles that even your better bookstores would love to get their hands on. As the product of decades of avid reading, the contents of the library are both the source of Rosler’s work and an installation/artwork that continues many of the concerns – with public space, access to information and engaged citizenship – that traverse her entire oeuvre."
--Elena Filipovic, Afterall, issue 15, Spring/Summer 2007

A personal library represents the private sphere of an individual, her way of acquiring and combining knowledge. Accumulation is the result of an intellectual inquiry that takes place in parallel with a more random search, which can lead us to unexpected textual, and therefore mental, spaces. Martha Rosler Library offers the visitor an opportunity to approach this open source of information with her or his own interests, and to create new affinities and connections between the elements of the library that add to more than the sum of knowledge contained in it. The bibliography, currently in process, can be accessed online at http://www.e-flux.com/projects/library

A reading group will be assembled to use the library as the basis for a series of informal discussions around texts chosen by Martha Rosler and members of the group. The meetings were initiated in New York, and are continuing at all locations of the library as it travels. For each meeting, a guest reader will select a text from the library and lead the group. Martha Rosler will join for a special talk on June 20th at 19:00 hrs.

Admission is free. All are welcome.

Martha Rosler was born in Brooklyn, New York, where she now lives, after spending the 1970s in California. She works in video, photo-text, installation, sculpture, and performance, and writes on aspects of culture. She is a renowned teacher and has lectured widely, nationally and internationally. Rosler's work is centered on everyday life and the public sphere, often with an eye to women's experience. Recurrent concerns are the media and war as well as architecture and the built environment, from housing and homelessness to systems of transport. Her work has been seen in the Venice Biennale of 2003; the Liverpool Biennial and the Taipei Biennial (both 2004); as well as many major international survey shows, including Open Systems at the Tate Modern (2005). Her work has been included in the Documenta exhibition in Kassel, Germany, and several Whitney biennials, and she has had numerous solo exhibitions. She has been invited to participate in SkulpturProjecte07 in Mόnster. A retrospective of her work, Positions in the Life World, was shown in five European cities and at the International Center of Photography and the New Museum for Contemporary Art (both in New York), concurrently (1998–2000). Rosler has published ten books of photography, art, and writing. Among them are Decoys and Disruptions: Selected Essays 1975–2001 (MIT Press, 2004, An October Book, in conjunction with the International Center of Photography), the photo books Passionate Signals (Cantz, 2005), In the Place of the Public: Airport Series (Cantz, 1997), and Rites of Passage (NYFA, 1995). If You Lived Here (Free Press, 1991) addresses her Dia project on housing, homelessness, and urban life. Several other books are in preparation. Rosler has been awarded the Spectrum International Prize in Photography for 2005. The prize was accompanied by a photo and video retrospective, If Not Now, When? at the Sprengel Museum in Hanover and NGBK in Berlin. Her solo exhibition, London Garage Sale, was held at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London in early June. She had a solo exhibition at Christian Nagel (Berlin) in January 2006 and at the University in Rennes in Spring 2006.

unitednationsplaza is exhibition as school. Structured as a seminar/residency program in the city of Berlin, it will involve collaboration with approximately 60 artists, writers, theorists and a wide range of audiences for a period of one year. In the tradition of Free Universities, most of its events will be open to all those interested to take part. unitednationsplaza is organized by Anton Vidokle in collaboration with Liam Gillick, Boris Groys, Martha Rosler, Walid Raad, Jalal Toufic, Nikolaus Hirsch, Natascha Sadr Haghighian and Tirdad Zolghadr.

paul chan against the tyranny of use value

Paul Chan: against the tyranny of use value

In a wonderful conversation between Paul Chan and the psychoanalyst and writer Adam Phillips in the exhibition catalogue, Phillips says that quotation:

"…is an opportunity to have a commonwealth of things, rather than an inside. They're in circulation, these quotes, and we can use them and they may be our best way of speaking. If we drop the pressure to be original and new, we're then free to use the cultural repertoire in a completely different way. I like the thing Cocteau said, that originality is trying to be like everyone else and failing."

Chan too is a treasure trove of quotes. So here goes, raw and random, not a conversation here, just some amazing thinking:

Adam Phillips: John Ashbery once said, the worse your art is, the easier it is to talk about…

Paul Chan: …I think they [people who talk to him] don't know that they're uncomfortable talking about art. And I think they're uncomfortable because there's no quick and easy and right solution to it. Perhaps, once upon a time, we thought art was the divine, high culture. We don't know what it is now.

AP: …it's terrible to live in a world where art becomes a kind of fetishised, thin religion.

PC: …there's a strange tyranny of use value … I think of that beautiful line by Adorno, who wrote that art is like weeping without tears. You could adapt that and say: the art market is a parody without laughter.

AP: …You talk in one interview … about "the cheap thrill of understanding". It's striking that when people write about your work, they end up merely describing it … We've been educated into the myth of understanding, as though understanding is the object of desire. But what do you do if you don't understand?

PC: …There's that beautiful quote from Randell Jarrell, who said, "If I can think of it, it's not what I want."

AP: There's a letter that Keats writes, where he talks about not liking poetry that has a palpable design on the reader. I often feel that some so-called artists are too knowing; they have a real intention and they want to do something to you and they think they know what that is.

PC: …Waiting for Godot had been playing in Paris for a year and a half and really going nowhere, but finally, for some reason it picked up and people loved it. A reporter asked Beckett, "What's it like to be a successful playwright?" Beckett replied: "I'm afraid the success comes form a complete misunderstanding of my work."

AP: John Ashbery said, "If you talk to other people, eventually they lose interest. But if you start talking to yourself, they want to listen in."

prefix foto

informed by eflux

Prefix Photo is an engaging magazine dedicated to contemporary photography and related arts. Characterized by innovative design and outstanding production values, Prefix Photo consists primarily of portfolio and essay sections, providing a complement of intelligent texts and breath-taking visuals. These features are accompanied by newsbriefs which provide information and opportunities for professional photographers, including new technological developments.
Each issue of Prefix Photo presents the work of Canadian photographers, both emerging and established, alongside that of their international counterparts. But Prefix Photo is not restricted to images conventionally considered to be "photographic"; its mandate encompasses film, video and digital art. Whether photographic or photo-based, photocollage or photocopied, photogravure or photogram, Prefix Photo seeks to represent the breadth of practices and concepts, old, new, or as yet unimagined, which surround the transformation of light into image. Prefix Photo creates a space in which the notion of photography is open to infinite possibilities of change, development and growth — where photography is, in a sense, "prefixed."

Prefix Photo has received numerous awards to date and was named Best New Magazine at the National Magazine Awards in 2002. Published twice annually by Prefix Institute of Contemporary Art in Toronto, the arrival of each issue is announced with a series of celebratory launches in major centres across Canada.

Publications with ordering possibility

The DaimlerChrysler Collection is pleased to announce that some 35 titles of the collection can now be ordered online. Thanks to a new established collaboration with the Berlin based bookshop Bόcherbogen am Savignyplatz all publications - covering the history of the collection from 1977 to today as well as new acquisitions – are now available worldwide.

Started in 1977 the DaimlerChrysler Collection focuses on abstract and geometrical pictorial concepts, from which it derives its distinctive character today. With its quality and presence among the staff and international museums, the DaimlerChrysler Collection continuously expanded to include some 1,500 works by German and international artists today. The Collection reflects the company’s commitment to art as an inherent element of the corporation's social self-concept and cultural profile.

Various exhibition catalogues, artist monographs and theme publications have been published over a period of almost thirty years. With contributions of various authors and acclaimed art critics every exhibition at DaimlerChrysler Contemporary is backed up with an attractive catalogue. These publications offer an excellent overview regarding the presented art works or new acquisitions and provide comprehensive information on the specific artists.

One of the exhibition series, called 'Minimalism and After', which was conceived in autumn 2000 for the Collection has recently been summarized in a broad compendium. About 300 works by approximately 150 artists are introduced in substantial work monographs, complemented by a thematic essay which – through the perspective of a corporate collection – sums up a 100 years history of abstract art from the Adolf Hφlzel class at the Stuttgart Academy 1906 to the present day.

gilbert and george the complete pictures

Lehmann Maupin Gallery is proud to announce a special booksigning event in New York with Gilbert & George. The signing will take place on Saturday, 12 May at the gallery (540 West 26th Street), from 4-6pm. A Traditional Afternoon tea will also be provided by Fortnum and Mason. Due to the limited number of books we recommend you arrive early.

'Gilbert & George: The Complete Pictures' was entirely designed by the artists themselves. The two-volume book contains every picture they have created over the last 35 years and comes complete with a unique carrying case that is a work of art in itself.

Known for their controversial artwork, Gilbert & George are widely regarded as the pre-eminent artists of their generation. The volume was published on the eve of a massive retrospective exhibition that opened at Tate Modern, London in February 2007, which will tour to five other major venues across the globe, including the Castello di Rivoli, Haus der Kunst and Brooklyn Museum of Art.

With nearly 1,500 colour illustrations as well as an introductory essay by leading art historian Rudi Fuchs, 'The Complete Pictures' is the most thorough exploration of the art of Gilbert & George to date.

Congratulations!

The book “Congratulations!” is published by Magasin 3 and Lars Mόller Publishers in conjunction with Pipilotti Rist’s exhibition “Gravity, Be My Friend” at Magasin 3 Stockholm Konsthall, Feb 10 – June 17, 2007.

Pipilotti Rist, one of the most acclaimed Swiss artists of today, and Richard Julin, chief curator at Magasin 3 Stockholm Konsthall (Sweden), met for a special 24-hour session in Zόrich.

Their conversation began at the artist’s studio and carried on into the night back at her home, while they cooked and ate dinner together.

The resulting book “Congratulations!” is a very personal and fascinating meeting that reveals new dimensions of the world of Pipilotti Rist, with anecdotes from the creation process and reflections on life, art and food.

The richly illustrated book features images of the major new piece, “Tyngdkraft, var min vδn” (“Gravity, Be My Friend”), created especially for the exhibition. Never before published images of recent works by Pipilotti Rist are also included, such as “Homo Sapiens Sapiens” shown at the Venice Biennale 2005, “A Liberty Statue For Lφndφn”, 2006, and many other seminal works.

'Off the Shelf: New Forms in Contemporary Artists' Books'

6 Oct - 17 Dec, 2006This exhibition includes work by thirteen international artists working today who create books alongside their other output, including painting, drawing, photography, and sculpture. The artists' books included here represent a diverse range of expression, yet they share a remarkable consideration for the craft of making an art object in the form of a book, with a focus on craftsmanship and attention to detail. Many of the books incorporate layered collage or hand-drawn, hand-painted, or hand-cut pages, resulting in unique objects and very small editions. Books by the following artists will be included: Brian Belott, Jonathan Callan, Russell Crotty, Miriam Dym, Simon Evans, Francesca Gabbiani, Carlos Garaicoa, David Hammons, Beatriz Milhazes, Takashi Murakami, Paul Noble, Monique van Genderen, and Martin Wilner. Organized by the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center, the exhibition and its brochure were conceived by curator Mary-Kay Lombino and are sponsored by the Friends of the Frances Lehman Loeb Exhibition Fund

3o Παγκοσμιο Συνεδριο Τυπογραφιας & Οπτικης Επικοινωνιας, 3rd international conference of typography and visual communication

In June 2007 the University of Macedonia Press, with the support of the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication at the University of Reading (UK) and the Association Typographique Internationale (ATypI), in collaboration with alterVision, and with the co-operation of Redfish and the Thessaloniki Design Museum, will be hosting the 3rd International Conference on Typography and Graphic Communication with the general theme From Verbal to Graphic. The Conference is part of a programme that has been on the cards since the end of the eighties, aiming to develop education and research in typography, as well as advance typographic practice in Greece. This effort has exceeded the modest boundaries of Greece, culminating in the two international conferences of 2002 and 2004, which put Thessaloniki on the worldwide typographic map.The Conference is now established worldwide as a major event in the field of typographic design and production, communication, and publishing. As a headline event characterised by the high level of organisation, the quality of presentations, workshops, and exhibitions, the Conference is a focal point for professionals in design and visual communication that attracts interest on an international scale to Thessaloniki, making the city the capital of typography during the proceeedings. In 2007 the Organising Committee seeks to exceed the expectations generated by the first two conferences. This time round the effort is supported by ATypI and the University of Reading, famous for the distinguished Department of Typography & Graphic Communication. The conference will host top-level speakers, both professionals and academics, from Greece and the international scene. Their presence guarantees the high level and success of the event, and their contribution is expected to spark debate and reflection on the developments in research, education, and practice in typography. Parallel events will include workshops, demonstrations by companies active in these fields, round-table discussions, debates, exhibitions, competitions, and promotion of new technologies in typography and visual communication. Throughout its duration the conference will, once again, enrich the cultural life of Thessaloniki, as well as Greece, by placing them at the centre of interest for the international typography and visual communication community.

Make Everything New—A Project On Communism

Make Everything New—A Project On CommunismEdited by Grant Watson, Gerrie van Noord & Gavin Everall (2006)Communism is routinely defined as defeated and its conquest the subject of regular celebration. Caught in the disappointment and negative connotations of the past, it has become all but unthinkable. Make Everything New seeks to rescue the idea of Communism from this trap. Collaborating with artists, writers and collectives, this project has commissioned and collected counter-narratives, abstract and unrealistic ideas, engaged political commentary and satirical work, that presents neither an historical or comprehensive overview nor a requiem for the past. It is a collection of partial and subjective accounts of various creative practices, an experimental platform for ideas and an attempt to see in what ways the communist imagination can be materialised as art.Contributors include: 16Beaver, Gopal Balakrishnan, Michael Blum, AA Bronson, Maria Eichorn, Factotum, Dmitry Gutov, Wu Ming, Aleksandra Mir, Sarah Pierce/The Metropolitan Complex, CK Rajan, Raqs Media Collective, Dont Rhine, Martha Rosler, Rob Stone, Alberto Toscano, and Klaus Weber.

foto with notes on a special [localminded] books classification

chotda says in flickr that has organizes his[her books under colourrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
yessss that is diferent!!!!that is quite interesting!!!you see i would always like to have a library that would classify objects with a view more closer to a cont. museum's view i mean to organize its material under various topics that have to do with its inhearent properties colours shape smell or sth
Imagine a library that shows thousands of objects and not only books of course under their colour it is a diferent way and i would work there.

an artist concerning a library a library concerning an artist

A library is a work in progress
material and documentation maintains a weird relation among the librarian, the information units and the audience. Always there s a room in my boom [liars] = always through the reading, the undefined classification of a brain. And inside it.
Lede shows that pic [follow the link] which is in a book in SaoPaolo libraries.
i think it is smart.
libraries maintain books.Store restore and take care of them.
A cool librarian will find it or a lucky person will take it at home.I think its rare to find people in greece talking about libraries and art, libraries and works and finally that we keep saying that a library is a work in progress.

TATE 'S; LIBRARYY!

The Library covers the same areas as Tate Collection (British art since 1500 and international art from 1900). Its strengths are modern and contemporary art, with over 40,000 books, more than 140,000 exhibition catalogues and many rare items in its special collections. The emphasis is on fine art in the Western tradition although coverage is being extended to other world areas. Architecture and design are only selectively collected and photography is covered primarily within fine art practice

WALTER BENJAMIN on books collecting

"It is widely acknowledged that Walter Benjamin was not only a singu-lar philosopher but also the most important and innovative literary criticand essayist in twentieth-century Germany. What is perhaps less well-known is that Benjamin was an accomplished and passionate bibliophile, collecting everything from German literature (especially Baroque),theology, fairy tales, and antiquarian children’s books. Such a collection:the magic of children’s books alongside the mosaic occultism of thoseBaroque texts and the metaphysics of the theological ones! Benjaminhimself was wont to describe his book acquisitions in unabashedly enthu-siastic and historical terms, as in his 1925 letter to Gershom Scholem, where he describes his “epochal” purchase of Von dem Werder’s 1624text, Der deutsche Tasso von Paris. In the course of Walter Benjamin’s shortand wandering life, books were, along with his Paul Klee painting AngelusNovus, his most beloved possessions. Benjamin referred to his love ofbooks as his “bibliomania.” Even when broke, virtually homeless, and inpoor health, he spent what money he had on books."

SECOND LIFE LIBRARY

About SL Library 2.0
Alliance Library System and OPAL are teaming up to extend the programs currently offered online to librarians and library users to the Second Life virtual reality game. Although there are a couple of libraries currently on Second Life, none currently offers programs or services. Alliance and OPAL will start with programs and eventually hope to offer library services.

Second Life is a 3-D virtual world entirely built and owned by its residents. Since opening to the public in 2003, it has grown explosively and today is inhabited by nearly 200,000 people from around the globe. There are shopping malls, events, homes, lands of different types, and best of all, participants can contribute content, buildings, and other digital creations.

what is this blog about

This blog is about a work in progress.
Its about a special library- an art library- a contemporary art library.
I m a librarian working on it since April 2006.
Its for a cont. art foundation located somewhere in Greece.
Actually we re talking about a private book collection that becomes public
through the organization, special classification and services creation.
A library is always a work in progress, an art library could be a great work of art and propably a conceptual work.
